Chapter Three: Intrigue and Hidden History—Reimagining the Past
Four bestselling authors are coming to Bayfield to share secrets behind their craft and what went into creating their latest novels. Emma Donoghue, Heather Marshall, Genevieve Graham, and Molly Fader will take the stage at the Bayfield Town Hall. They will speak about diverse characters, suspense, and masterfully researched stories as we gather for conversation, connection, and yes… signature cocktails. We will delve into hidden pasts, get lost in page-turning mysteries, and celebrate their resilient female protagonists. Join us for this exclusive author event on Friday and Saturday, September 25 and 26.
Then on Sunday, September 27, we will host a special writers' workshop titled "10 Tips for Adding Tighter Tension" with Molly Fader. It turns a "no, thank you" from an editor into "Can I please see more?" Whether you're writing historical fiction or a memoir, whether you're brainstorming a book or in the final editorial pass, it's never too late to add more tension. A highly interactive workshop, so bring a notebook, your synopsis and your first five pages.
Our Authors.
Emma Donoghue is an internationally bestselling Canadian novelist, screenwriter, and playwright who has published 20 works of fiction across a wide variety of genres. Her novel Room sold almost three million copies and won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Donoghue's screenplay for Room was nominated for an Academy Award. Her other novels include: The Pull of the Stars and The Wonder, for which she co-wrote the screenplay for the Netflix adaptation. Her heart-warming Irish folk musical, The Wind Coming over the Sea, premiered at the Blyth Festival in 2025. Her latest novel, The Paris Express, is a historical thriller that reimagines an 1895 Montparnasse Railway disaster.
Heather Marshall is a bestselling Canadian author of three gripping historical fiction novels. Her work showcases intense research that uncovers the buried and overlooked experiences of women. Looking for Jane, her debut novel, about a secret network of women fighting for the right to choose, was an instant bestseller and was translated into 17 languages. The Secret History of Audrey James explores resilience and sacrifice during WWII. Her latest release, Liberty Street, focuses on the real-life 1960s Andrew Mercer Reformatory for Women—with a riveting dual-timeline narrative partly set in Bayfield.
Genevieve Graham is a Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, and USA Today bestselling Canadian author widely celebrated for her meticulously researched fiction. Genevieve is dedicated to illuminating forgotten, overlooked, and sometimes dark chapters of Canadian history. Some of her bestselling books include: The Forgotten Home Child, Letters Across the Sea, Bluebird, The Secret Keeper, and On Isabella Street. Her latest book, The Chambermaid’s Key, is a dazzling dual-timeline story set in Toronto’s Ward district and enmeshed in a mystery that takes almost a century to solve.
Molly Fader is a USA Today bestselling American-Canadian author known for her emotionally rich women’s fiction, contemporary romance, and historical dramas. Her books include: The McAvoy Sisters Book of Secrets, The Sunshine Girls, The Bitter and Sweet of Cherry Season, as well as 50 romance novels under the pen name of Molly O’Keefe. Molly is also the host of the podcast Day Drinking with Authors. Her latest novel, Lady X, is a fast-paced story of female resistance and rage that sweeps from contemporary L.A. to the gritty 1970’s New York to uncover the secret of three generations of women.

Intrigue and Hidden History—Reimagining the Past is organized by the Bayfield Writers Series and supported by the Village Bookshop, which is a strong supporter of bringing the arts to Bayfield.
On September 25, we kick off with a Friday evening cocktail event. Saturday, Sept. 26, our authors will join us for powerful conversations. The Bayfield Writers Series is also excited to add a separate writer’s workshop on Sunday, Sept. 27, where Molly Fader will offer tips to writers on building tension in their craft.
Both tickets will go on sale in early July, and seating will be limited.
